Aims

Compare and contrast the roles of rational vs. intuitive thinking in decision making in general and understand the limits of both approaches:-

Characterise the fundamental problem of uncertainty in decision making;

Assess the impact of personality, perceptual, and emotional styles on decision making;

Devise strategies for managing and improving group decision making including enhancing group creative thinking;

Apply the principles of critical action learning and action research to individual and organisational decision making.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Compare & contrast the roles of rational vs. intuitive thinking in decision making in general and within the context of a Cognitive Continuum Theory;

(LO2) Characterize the fundamental problem of uncertainty in decision making particularly as related to decision tasks and the concept of the task continuum;

(LO3) Assess the impact of personality perceptual and emotional styles on decision making;

(LO4) Devise strategies for managing and improving group decision making including enhacing group creative thinking;

Rationality and expertise: intuition vs. experience;

Decision tasks and the fundamental problem of uncertainty;

Managerial thinking: personality, perceptual, and emotional aspects;

Managerial thinking: creativity and problem solving;

Managerial decision making: group and participative approaches;

Managerial decision making: conflict and negotiation;

Decision making and the application of critical action learning.
