Aims

The aims of this module will be to provide students with the knowledge and skills to understand and critically evaluate the implications of ethical issues in the context of finance with particular reference to the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and the Standards of Professional Conduct.
The module will also aim at providing students with a critical understanding of the role, nature and implications of the current structure of regulation of banks and international financial markets.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will be able to understand the main issues of broad ethical principles concerning the obligations of employers and employees towards each other and towards their clients.

(LO2) Students will be able to evaluate and apply the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.

(LO3) Students will be able to critically evaluate the ethical issues, ethical practices and ethical dilemmas in the context of finance.

(LO4) Students will be able to evaluate the main regulations affecting the banking and the financial sector.

(LO5) Students will be able to critically analyse how regulation impacts on banks and the financial sector.

(LO6) Students will be able to evaluate the impact of the 2008 financial crisis on both ethics and regulations in the UK and internationally.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Delivery: Mixed, hybrid delivery, with social distancing on campus.

Teaching Method: Online asynchronous learning materials
Description: condensed videos that will be complemented by learning material not delivered via videos. These videos will most definitely take longer to “digest”. Additional videos will be very likely added as we go along to re-enforce or clarify issues. The module follows the principle of flipped classroom approach with very active learning supported by ad-hoc short videos.

Teaching Method - Seminar
Description: The seminar will be designed to allow time and space for meaningful discussion of topics related to ethical and regulatory issues. The module leader will take the role of facilitator and will support students in accessing and understanding essential information to topics, relevant theories and tools of analysis. Description: These independent learning hours are aimed at supporting the directed student learning. The module leader will provide guidance in the form of suggested readings and topics to examine with the expectation that students are well prepared to contribute to the seminar activities. Self-Directed Learning will include research activity, developing academic writing skills, and wider reading to support the module.
