Aims

This module aims to provide students with a critical understanding of the key concepts, models and debates in leadership. Students will understand different schools of thought on strategic leadership and different approaches to understanding effective leadership in different situations and contexts, including leadership of diverse and multi-cultural teams. Furthermore the module will enable students to reflect on the role of leadership in achieving strategic goals, and their implicit theories of leadership in relation to their leadership practice and identify actions for their own leadership development. As well as considering leadership’s contribution to organisational strategy, the module will also consider leadership and its application at the group/team level.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lectures will be interactive and supported by learning materials accessed via Vital. Guest speakers will also be included to provide an insight into specific aspects of leadership.

Students will explore how key models, concepts, frameworks and theories can be applied to their own organisational context and to a range of other simulated leadership situations during class discussion and exercises in order to critically reflect on the application of these and the extent to which they can be used to gain a fuller understanding of leadership.

A range of leaders will be invited to provide their perspectives on the challenges and processes involved in leadership in different contexts. Students will be provided with opportunities to develop their understanding by debate and to critically reflect on how they would have addressed these situations to gain a fuller understanding of leadership.

Students will be expected to complete schedule directed module pre-reading, to prep are for some exercises, tasks and assessments during the module and to research, develop and write a final written assessment. In addition to the suggested readings, students might be expected to develop their own reading, research and preparation of topics for the final assessment.
