Aims

To develop the necessary skills to design small or medium scale buildings taking into consideration a wide range of architectural, urban, socio-cultural, economic and political issues that are inherently connected with architectural practices.


Learning Outcomes

Students will demonstrate an ability to design buildings taking into consideration all its aspects: structure, materials, function, interior and exterior space as well as all *urban issues that concern the building.

Represent ideas appropriately using the most effective media to convey a clear message.< br />
*urban meaning urban/suburban pertaining to location.

Students will demonstrate an ability to understand theoretical issues in order to develop an individual critical posture in relation to the design project.

Students will demonstrate an ability to identify research sources and methods that are appropriate  for the development of the project.

Students will demonstrate an awareness of environmental, sustainability, health & safety and disability issues that are central to contemporary architectural agendas.

Students will demonstate effective representation of ideas using the most effective media to convey a clear message.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between people and buildings and their environment.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of architectural tectonics.

Students will demonstrate the application of an architectural agenda and design approach which has been driven/informed by research findings.


Syllabus

Students are requested to design small and medium scale buildings that respond to specific urban and socio-cultural conditions. The projects should focus on the relation between the user and the building and on the tectonic qualities of the building, comprehensively resolving all issues associated with location and environment, materiality, function and structure.

There is no reassessment opportunity, Notes (applying to all assessments) Display of work and portfolio review - including additional/supporting work (development sketches, working models, drawings, etc.). accompanied by an A3 sized Design Report containing and evidencing : research and analysis (site, materials , precedent , socio-cultural) , design strategies (eg environmental , conceptual , material and structural , architectural agenda ) design development and proposals .( plus exercises as set by studios ). The comprehensive design report forms part of the assessment. The report should be digitally submitted . Assessment: Students defend their design portfolios in interim and final reviews. Anonymous assessment forms part of the assessment. Assessment of design portfolio/display and report is undertaken by year based staff , by not less than two internal examiners and it is then moderated by at least one internal examiner who has not taught on the module. Work is assessed and moderated by teaching team and other staff in accordance with agreed internal procedure.External examiners review all modules and programmes.
