Aims

    1. To develop and practise academic skills in identifying a current design problem, formulating an analysis strategy, managing the design process and drawing relevant conclusions from the design project and response to any research findings.
    2. To develop the idea of an architectural design as a vehicle to apply research study and information drawn from architectural literature.
    3. To develop a deeper understanding in depth of a relevant body of design precedent and literature

Learning Outcomes

To identify an appropriate research topic that can be investigated and reported on through sources of information that be in the form of written and/or design output.

To design an effective project using appropriate methods (e.g. literature review, case study) and techniques

To manage the research process effectively within given resources and meeting milestones on time
To gain a deeper understanding of a particular topic in a chosen subject area


To form independent and objective views on issues in a specialised subject area,


To produce a well-conceived, appropriate, well-supported and well-executed design project or agreed product

Tutorial -

The module is taught through studio based tutorials by both full time and part time staff

Assessment -

Studio based – digital portfolio review plus work display (100%) and additional material (sketches, models, drawings, etc.)


Assessed by studio tutorial staff involved, moderated by other school staff and external examiner

Coursework  digital portfolio su  summer  100  Yes  Standard UoL penalty applies  Assessment 1 Notes (applying to all assessments) Assessment: DESIGN: Portfolio is marked as a body of work. Students defend their design portfolios in a interim and final reviews to a panel of both internal and external visitors. Summative feedback is given at the end of the reviews. Assessment of design portfolios is undertaken by not less than two internal examiners and is then moderated by at least one internal examiner (normally the Head of School) who has not taught on the module. DESIGN REPORT : approx. 3000 word design report Wiki : it is expected that the student will regularly update their wiki on VITAL in a timely manner to reflect their research progress The External examiner reviews all modules and programmes.
