Aims

The module seeks to provide a broader background of architectural practice to complement the professional experience of the student.
Students will develop a knowledge of the fundamental legal, professional and statutory responsibilities of the architect, as well as the basic management theories and business principles.

The module aims to enable students to demonstrate a reflective and critical approach towards their professional experience and develop the ability to identify individual learning needs.
Students should develop an understanding of their personal responsibility required to prepare for qualification as an architect in the future.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Demonstrate adequate knowledge of the industries, organisations, regulations and procedures involved in translating design concepts into buildings and integrating plans into overall planning.

(LO2) Demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental legal, professional and statutory responsibilities of the architect, and the organisations, regulations and procedures involved in the negotiation and approval of architectural designs, including land law, development control, building regulations and health and safety legislation.

(LO3) Demonstrate knowledge of the professional inter-relationships of individuals and organisations involved in procuring and delivering architectural projects, and how these are defined through contractual and organisational structures.

(LO4) Demonstrate knowledge of the basic management theories and business principles related to running both an architect’s practice and architectural projects, recognising current and emerging trends in the construction industry.

(LO5) Understand the cost control mechanisms which operate during the development of a project.

(S1) Ability to identify individual learning needs.

(S2) Understand the personal responsibility required to prepare for qualification as an architect.

(S3) Time-management skills.


Syllabus

 

The module will provide students with knowledge of the fundamental legal, professional and statutory responsibilities of the architect, and the organisations, regulations and procedures involved in the negotiation and approval of architectural designs, including land law, development control, building regulations and health and safety legislation;

The course will explore the professional inter-relationships of individuals and organisations involved in procuring and delivering architectural projects, and how these are defined through contractual and organisational structures;
Students will acquire knowledge of the basic management theories and business principles related to running both an architect’s practice and architectural projects, recognising current and emerging trends in the construction industry.
This will include an understanding of the cost control mechanisms which operate during the development of a project;
The material will be delivered throu gh online study packs, which provide an introduction and overview to a specific topic, a practice example and are explored through ‘scenarios’.
