Aims

The first aim of this module is to introduce students to a range of graphical and modelling techniques, which include precise survey drawings, more expressive sketches and model-making skills to represent architecture and space. The second aim is for students to develop an understanding of 'place'.

Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Develop an understanding and knowledge of recognised drawing conventions.

(LO2) Prepare architectural representations using a range of media.

(LO3) For students to be able to capture the characteristics of a given ‘site’ as a place through models and graphical means.

(LO4) LEARNING OUTCOMES IN RELATION TO PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Certain modules in Architecture address the General Criteria as defined by the RIBA and ARB. Fulfilling these Criteria is an important part of meeting the professional requirements relating to both RIBA accreditation and ARB Prescription. The General Criteria and other professional aspects of Architecture degrees at Liverpool University are described here:
http://www.liv.ac.uk/architecture/undergraduate/registered-architect/

The mapping of the RIBA/ARB General Criteria to the specific modules that make up the Architecture degrees is described in this table:

http://www.liv.ac.uk/media/livacuk/architecture/downloads/mapping-criteria.pdf

(S1) Communication (oral, written and visual) - Presentation skills – oral.

(S2) Communication (oral, written and visual) - Presentation skills - visual.

(S3) Critical thinking and problem solving - Creative thinking.

Visiting site(s) and self-directed exploration of the city, sketching their experiences, expressive drawings and montage, 3d Construct based on montage, drawing the 3d construct (renderings), scale survey of part of site, superimposition of rendering onto site survey and 3d exploration in model making.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: online (asynchronous and synchronous)
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: Lectures introduce the project and inform its development

Teaching Method 2 - Tutorial
Description: hybrid of online and face-to-face per week (depending on stage of project)
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: (typically 1 online and 1 face-to-face per week), plus online reviews at regular intervals

Teaching Method 3 - Field Work
Description: site visits and self-directed exploration of city
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: Self-directed by students to avoid social distancing issues. Students can visit via desktop studies and remote research if students cannot or do not wish to visit in person

Teaching Method 4 - Workshops
Description: skill building sessions
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: Typically to take place on campus in tutorial groups
