Aims

The aim is for students to generate a small-scale design proposal, based on a brief on a given site.

The student's proposal should show design development from an initial concept.

The student should be able to develop a series of spaces each displaying different architectural qualities and responding in some way to brief and site.

For students to demonstrate some understanding of site analysis and site response.

For students to demonstrate some understanding of design process and idea generation.

To produce a set of drawings and model to scale for review and digital portfolio submission.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) For the students to generate a conceptual design-idea and use it to develop a process.

(LO2) For the student to understand the process of design, leading to a proposed form.

(LO3) For the student to interpret a brief and produce design proposals.

(LO4) For the student to demonstrate some understanding of materials and technology in their design proposal.

(LO5) For the student to have some understanding of 'site' and 'place' and 'journey'.

(LO6) For the students to generate a process-led design strategy.

Syllabus

 

Students will be working in tutor groups of about 12, both online and during their days on campus.

A detailed briefing document containing site plans and other important information is issued at the start of the project.

Focus on precedent studies and site analysis.

Focus on themes of: thresholds, private and public space, materiality, atmosphere.

The studio programme is complemented by lectures from module staff.
