Aims

Aims: To provide students with a background in management theory and business organisation and how these relate to the management of design practicesin the UK.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Learning Outcomes: This Module will enable students to: Appreciate the principles of business management

(LO2) Develop an awareness of how small businesses (architecture practices) operate

(LO3) Understand how buildings are designed and built in the context of architectural and professional practice and the framework of the construction within which it operates

(LO4) Apply management principles to design working practices

(LO5) Understand the principles of quality assurance and the effects of recent safety and design liability legislation

(LO6) Understand the principles, practicalities and problems of planning and management of the design process

(LO7) Develop an awareness and understanding of the procedures for appraising working practices

(LO8) Develop an awareness and understanding of the principles of whole lifecosting and environmental life cycle assessment at the design stage

(LO9) This module contributes to GC6, GC7.2, GC10 and GC11 RIBA validation criteria

(S1) Critical thinking and problem solving practice for Year Out work placement


Syllabus

 

1 Syllabus Principles of business management Introduction to management: Forms of trading and business organisations, roles of directors, shareholders The development of theories of motivation, leadership and organisations. Development and implementation of corporate strategies. The organisation and management of a small architecture practice Introduction to how buildings are designed and built in the context of architectural and professional practice and the framework of the construction within which it operates   Management of the design process Understanding the design process Planning the design Understanding clients Identification of client needs and development of the brief Design data flows Design cost and quality control Risk management at the design stage Design buildability Addressing the whole lifecycle costing issues at the design stage   Appraising working practices QualityAssurance/Management. Total quality management (TQM) Benchmarking Performance indicators   Management of the design regulatory obligations Addressing health and safety concerns throughout the whole life cycle of a building at the design stage
