Aims

The aims of the module relate to the skills and techniques needed to develop research ideas and to communicate one's research using visual material, academic writing and the spoken word. These skills are specifically needed to  develop academic writing and to  make a seminar paper presentations and a conference poster present ation. 1. To develop techniques used in academic writing to conveys ideas and critical analysis clearly and concisely. 2. To discuss how to present research information and ideas clearly to an audience using the spoken word, visual information and relevant technology, and to practice these skills.  3. To develop techniques to present research information and ideas clearly in techniques which use both visual information and written work for example an article or a conference poster.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Research a topic using a variety of high quality sources of information.

(LO2) Develop critical analysis of a the student's research topic and communicate this to a general and a more specialist audience verbally and in writing.

(LO3) Prepare a clear and consice piece of academic writing.

(LO4) Design and prepare graphic layouts to communicate a mixture of written and visual material.

(LO5) Prepare and deliver a verbal presentation, using appropriate technology, on a subject researched by the student.

(LO6) Participate in group discussions and peer review activites; commenting on and discussing the student's own work and that of their peers in small groups and the wider class.

Syllabus

 

Th e course is organised around a series of teaching and learning activities and assessments with a strong emphasis on peer review and self reflection at every stage. 1. Preparation of a short abstract on a given topic to be peer reviewed but not formally assessed.  2. Preparation and delivery of a formal seminar presentation to students and staff, involved with the MA programme. 3. Preparation of a longer piece of illustrated writing for example a magazine or journal article.  4. Preparation of a co nference poster for a broader aduience.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lectures and Seminars
Description: Teaching sessions are usually divided into a lecture related to assessment and a related seminar.

Notes: As there will be personal direction as part of the contact time the contact time may vary a little with class size.

Self-Directed Learning Description: Students will need to carry out research for the coursework and then prepare their assignments and practice any presentations. They will also need to engage in peer review activities for example reading one another's draft articles and providing feedback relating to the marking criteria and practising presentations ahead of the formal presentation seminar assessment.
