Incredible Ideas Sustaining the North

Sustainable North - the third in the series of New Thinking from the North workshops developed through the N8 Research Partnership - was organised by colleagues at the University of Manchester and took place in the dynamic atmosphere of the Biospheric foundation in Salford.

The theme of sustainability was selected in recognition of the fact that increasingly notions of economic development are being brought into dialogue with questions of environmental sustainability and it is recognised that the sustainability of the North lies at the intersection of economic, social and environmental concerns.

Key Questions Addressed at the Workshop

  •  How can the arts contribute to making the North sustainable?
  • What historical models of community innovation (co-operatives, friendly societies) can be drawn on?
  • What new economies of change are being developed within and by communities and how can we help to sustain them through collaboration?

To explore these questions we drew on expertise in sustainable development within the N8 universities and among practitioners in various fields to present a programme incorporating a diverse range of speakers. These included: art practitioners, academic researchers and leaders from innovative community-focussed projects, with a keynote given by Pam Warhurst of Incredible Edible
