The Russell Group-China Workshop on
Sustainable Cities
3rd-5th June 2015
Hosted by
Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), Suzhou, China
As part of the
Russell Group-China Collaborative Programme

Keynote speakers include Professor Michael Parkinson, University of Liverpool; Professor Weiguo Zhang, East China Normal University; Professor Simin Davoudi, Newcastle University; Professor Nick Gallent, University College London; Professor Cecilia Wong, University of Manchester and others to be confirmed.

The three-day workshop aims to:

  • Share understanding of challenges and opportunities around sustainable cities and specific research themes
  • Identify opportunities for new partnerships and strengthen existing ones
  • Form and strengthen academic and business networks in the sustainable cities field between the UK and China
  • Develop outlines of specific funding bids, tied to priorities/specific calls of funders

Days 1 and 2 (Wednesday 3rd June and Thursday 4th June) will feature four plenary sessions on the broad topic of urban sustainability and its conceptualisation for the contemporary Chinese city; urban-rural linkages; water and smart cities. Keynote presentations from our invited guests will set the context for presentations and round-table discussions aimed at building on existing, and developing new, research partnerships.

Day 3 (Friday 5th June) will focus on working in partnership to address the challenges of sustainable cities, using examples from the University of Liverpool, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Lancaster University and elsewhere that illustrate how universities can work successfully with businesses and others to promote sustainable urban development, to consider how further links can be developed.
