Personal Statement

My research interests lie at the interface of Sociolinguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis. I am interested in social, race and gender (in) equalities and the ways language is used to sustain or challenge such inequalities. I currently work on representations of migration in public narratives and how these often perpetuate harmful stereotypes about "deserving" and "good" migrants. Another strand of my research deals with speaker identity construction in relation to the local and the wider sociocultural contexts of interactions. I have investigated these issues in educational contexts, public documents, media representations, interviews and conversational narratives. I am currently an external collaborator on the international project "Tracing Racism in Anti-raCist discourse: a critical approach to European public speech on the migrant and refugee crisis" (TRACE/ HFRI-FM17-42), funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, in collaboration with Universities in Greece, Malta and Switzerland. I am also a member of the UKRI ESRC Peer Review College. My office hours in semester 2 are Tuesdays 1-2pm (f2f) and Thursdays 1-2pm (on Teams).
