UK DNA Archive for Companion Animals

The UK DNA Archive for companion Animals was formed in 2003 and provides a biological resource to assist veterinary research scientists study the genetic basis of a wide range of diseases in dogs, cats and horses.

  • New advances in technology and the analysis of DNA (the 'blue-print' for life) now make it increasingly possible to identify the causes of important veterinary conditions which are not yet well understood. This research can also help scientist understand the equivalent diseases in humans, such as diabetes

  • Genetic research into these conditions will proceed more effectively and quickly if large numbers of DNA samples are readily available from animals where their disease has been accurately diagnosed and carefully documented

  • UK Veterinary schools and an increasingly number of key referral veterinary practices are collaborating with the Archive to collect and bank the residual blood samples left over from pathology investigations performed for diagnostic purposes

  • Samples are sent to the University of Manchester where staff are co-ordinating this collaborative venture and banking DNA extracted from samples
