About

Personal Statement

I was educated at the Universities of Amsterdam, Sussex and St. Antony's College, Oxford. I completed my PhD at the University of Amsterdam in Political Science and International Relations with a focus on Latin American Politics. Before coming to Liverpool, I was a lecturer in international political economy at the University of Warwick and a lecturer in international relations at the University of Amsterdam. My research has focused on political strategies of the labour movement in Brazil, including the Latin American regional context.

My research focuses on Brazilian foreign policy in the context of international relations in Latin America. The project examines traditional as well as non-traditional areas of foreign policy, including environmental politics, climate change, democracy and human rights. Another project examines the role of transnational solidarity movements and exile in the opposition to military dictatorship in Chile.

My latest book is entitled Labour Mobilization, Politics and Globalization in Brazil: Between Militancy and Moderation. An overview of my publications can be found here.

My articles and interviews on Brazilian and Latin American politics have appeared on BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), Business News Radio (the Netherlands), and in the Independent, Newsweek, Daily Mail online, the Conversation, Business Insider, Christian Science Monitor, International Peace Institute/Global Observatory, Latin American Science.org, World Weekly, Brasil Observer, Brasil 247, Diário do Centro do Mundo (Brazil).

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
