In Introduction to Afro Modern:
Journeys Through the Black Atlantic

Led by Dr Suzanne May in collaboration with Tate Liverpool
Saturday 13 March 10am-4pm at Tate Liverpool, Albert Dock, Liverpool
.

This study day will introduce the exhibition’s key theme, an interpretation of the Black Atlantic as a network of surrounding and interconnecting cultures spanning Africa, Europe, North and South America and the Caribbean, which played an important role in the development of Modern Art.

The Influence of African art on Modernism, Picasso in particular, is clear, and the continuing dialogue among the various cultures is seen in the works of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1930s through to contemporary art.

The day will provide a historical overview of African-American art and history, with talks from local artists exploring the wider notion of the multi-national Black Atlantic.

Fee: £30 (no concessions) Includes entry to exhibition
