Welcome from the Head of Department
On behalf of the Department of Chemistry I am delighted to welcome you as a new student. The department is a community of scholars working across all areas of Chemistry, and we are sure you will benefit from the breadth and vitality that is possible in a department of this size, with world-class teaching and in-depth specialist expertise available to you.
You can find out how to register on the University’s central welcome webpages. There is a lot of additional information on our website. Please do not worry if it seems a lot to take in. We will work hard during Welcome Week and in the first semester to make your transition to undergraduate study as smooth as possible.

Chemistry Student Support Office
The Chemistry Student Support Office offers help and advice for all Chemistry students and can be found opposite the main entrance to Chemistry. There is a team of three staff dedicated to assist students with any questions. Contact details are:

Academic advisor and other academic support
All students at the University of Liverpool will be assigned a named academic member of staff as their Academic Advisor. Their role is: to develop a relationship with you; to provide information, advice and guidance on academic matters; and to direct you to further sources of information on academic matters as well as the wide range of information, advice and guidance on non-academic matters available to students at Liverpool.
An additional layer of support, unique to Chemistry, are year coordinators who all work together, along with the Senior Tutor and Director of Teaching and Learning, to ensure decent progression of students and offer a smooth transition between years. You will be introduced to your year 1 coordinator in welcome week.
Chemistry Virtual Summer School 2023-24
All new Year 1 Chemistry students will be enrolled on the Chemistry Virtual Summer School 2023-24. This is a course that is hosted on our virtual learning environment - Canvas. The Virtual Summer School has a welcome from staff and students in the Department, information about optional modules, study skills advice, and revision resources. Detailed information about Welcome Week and pre-Welcome Week activities will be posted in the Virtual Summer School as soon it becomes available. You will be able to log on to Canvas to access the Virtual Summer School as soon as you have set up your University IT account (see https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/csd/quickstart/).
Chemistry Student Handbook
The Chemistry Student Handbook is a useful source of information about the Chemistry Department, the facilities available, the teaching staff and information about your degree. It will be available electronically in CANVAS once you have enrolled.

The University of Liverpool welcome webpage provides useful and up-to-date information including all the contents of your Welcome Pack in electronic format.
Student Support Services
Your first few days at University can be quite confusing and it may take time for you to settle into your new surroundings and life as a student. It may also be your first time away from home.
At the Student Services Centre the specialist teams are available to help with any practical, emotional or general issues. They can also direct you to the most appropriate services across the University.

Liverpool Guild of Students (LGoS) is the Students' Union for the University of Liverpool.
