Teaching
My teaching is centred in the study of the Ancient Egyptian language and the surviving textual corpus from Ancient Egypt. Our main concern is to train our students to be able to read and deploy Ancient Egyptian written sources in the original language (at UG level: Old Egyptian, Middle Egyptian, Late Egyptian and Coptic) to a high level and be capable at the end of the programme in engaging independently with the surviving textual corpus and pursuing such interests at PG level. We concentrate particularly on establishing contextually sensitive nuanced meaning based on grammatical analysis, deploying lexical tools and close reading in the co(n)text. Interpretation of original sources is grounded in full discussion of social and cultural context and also of the text as an object surviving into the modern world.
